Customized 11-day Rajasthan Trip Itinerary
Day 1: Jaipur Arrival and Sightseeing
Your driver meets you at Jaipur airport, railway station or hotel and takes you to check in.
Once settled, Jaipur gives you a strong first day. Amber Fort and Jaigarh Fort are both on the same hill and work well together in the afternoon.
Inside Amber, the Sheesh Mahal is a room built entirely from mirror inlays. Jaigarh holds the Jaivana cannon, a 6-meter barrel fired exactly once in 1720. Buy the combined ticket at the entrance as it costs less than buying both separately.
Day 2: Jaipur City Tour
The old city keeps the second day full. City Palace, Jantar Mantar and Hawa Mahal are all on the same stretch and take up the morning comfortably.
The Samrat Yantra at Jantar Mantar, built in 1724, is still accurate to within 2 seconds. The view of Hawa Mahal everyone photographs is from the cafe terrace across the road.
Johari Bazaar in the evening is the best place on this route for blue pottery and block-printed fabric.
Day 3: Jaipur to Pushkar, 145 km, 3 hours
The drive to Pushkar takes about three hours with a natural stop at Dargah Sharif in Ajmer, 11 km before Pushkar, for those interested.
Pushkar is one long bazaar and 52 ghats around a lake. The Brahma Temple is a few minutes walk from the market.
Silver jewellery and leather goods are cheaper here than anywhere else on this route, so hold back the shopping budget for Pushkar.
Day 4: Pushkar to Jodhpur, 190 km, 4 hours
Four hours of driving and Jodhpur opens up after check-in. Mehrangarh Fort is the first stop. The audio guide at the entrance costs Rs 150 and is worth it as the seven-gallery museum has almost no labelling without it.
Walking down to Toorji Ka Jhalra stepwell afterwards gives you the view back up at the fort from the old city lanes, the most photographed angle in Jodhpur.
Day 5: Jodhpur Sightseeing
Umaid Bhawan Palace takes the morning. Construction ran from 1929 to 1943 as a famine relief project employing 3,000 workers, and the museum covers this history well.
In the afternoon, 9 km out, Mandore Gardens houses the royal Marwar cenotaphs and rarely experiences crowding. The Clock Tower market in the evening is where to eat.
Mirchi bada, a stuffed green chilli fritter, and makhania lassi are both specific to Jodhpur and worth trying.
Day 6: Jodhpur to Jaisalmer, 290 km, 5 hours
The landscape changes about 100 km out of Jodhpur as scrub gives way to open desert. Jaisalmer Fort after check-in, where 3,000 people still live inside the walls today.
Patwon Ki Haveli is five merchant mansions built between 1800 and 1860. Salim Singh Ki Haveli nearby has a roof shaped like a spreading peacock.
Both are in the lanes below the fort and both charge entry separately.
Day 7: Jaisalmer
Kuldhara village, located 18 km away, is the destination for the morning visit. The entire Paliwal community left overnight in 1825 and never returned, leaving houses and a temple exactly as they were.
Entry is Rs 50, the walk takes 45 minutes. Desert National Park in the afternoon, 40 km out, offers a 2-hour guided jeep tour for around Rs 800 per vehicle. It is one of the few places left where the Great Indian Bustard can be spotted.
Day 8: Jaisalmer and Sam Sand Dunes
Gadisar Lake, just outside the city walls, is a quiet morning hour well spent before the evening at Sam. The camel safari at Sam Sand Dunes, 42 km from Jaisalmer, runs from 4 PM when the light on the dunes turns deep orange.
Folk music and dal baati churma at the desert camp follows. Overnight camp stays cost between Rs 3,500 and Rs 6,500 per person and are booked weeks in advance from November to February.
Day 9: Jaisalmer to Bikaner, 330 km, 5.5 hours
The drive goes through Pokhran and takes about five and a half hours. After check-in, Junagarh Fort has never been captured in 430 years, despite its location on flat ground.
The ticket counter closes at 4:30 PM so arrival time matters. Cameras cost Rs 50 extra at the entrance. The Kote Gate market in the evening has Bikaneri bhujia, produced here since the 1870s, and camel leather goods made locally.
Day 10: Bikaner to Chittorgarh to Udaipur, 490 km, 9 hours
Leaving by 7 AM is essential on this day. The route goes through Nagaur and Pali before reaching Chittorgarh in the early afternoon.
Chittorgarh Fort covers 700 acres on a plateau 180 meters above the plains. Vijay Stambha, a 37-meter carved tower built in 1448, is the main structure. Allowing 90 minutes before continuing, Udaipur is 115 km further.
Arriving by early evening leaves time for the Lake Pichola boat ride before dark.
Day 11: Udaipur to Ranakpur to Jaipur, 340 km, 6 hours
Visiting City Palace before checkout is worth the early start. The Crystal Gallery inside holds crystal furniture ordered from Birmingham in 1877 that sat unused in storage for 117 years. Entry is Rs 500.
On the drive back, Ranakpur is a natural stop. The Jain temple complex built in 1439 has 1,444 individually carved marble pillars, none identical. Entry is Rs 200 for non-Jains. Back in Jaipur by evening with a drop wherever needed.
