Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Delhi

Your driver meets you at the airport or railway station and takes you directly to your hotel in Karol Bagh or Connaught Place. Afternoon sightseeing covers India Gate, Qutub Minar, Humayun’s Tomb, and the Lotus Temple. Leave Qutub Minar for after 4 PM when the crowds have thinned and the light is warm on the stone.

Local tip: Humayun’s Tomb is the architectural model that the Taj Mahal was based on. It costs Rs. 35 for Indian nationals and sees a fraction of the Taj Mahal’s footfall. Visit it in the late afternoon and you will often have the gardens almost to yourself.

Overnight: Delhi

Day 2: Old Delhi

A full day in the older half of the city. The itinerary covers Red Fort, Jama Masjid, Raj Ghat, and Chandni Chowk. A rickshaw ride through Chandni Chowk costs around Rs. 100 to 150 per ride and saves you considerable time and energy in the narrow lanes. Walk into Paranthe Wali Gali for breakfast or lunch. Try aloo paratha with curd, kachori, or a plate of jalebis.

Local tip: Jama Masjid is best visited in the morning before 11 AM. The view from the top of the minaret over the rooftops of Old Delhi is one of the best vantage points in the city and takes about 20 minutes round trip.

Overnight: Delhi

Day 3: Delhi to Agra (210 km, approx. 3.5 hours)

Leave Delhi by 6 AM via the Yamuna Expressway to reach Agra before the Taj Mahal opens. The East Gate has shorter queues than the South Gate. Entry fees are Rs. 50 for Indian nationals and Rs. 1,300 for foreign nationals. Book tickets online at asi.payumoney.com before you travel to avoid a 45-minute queue at the counter.

After the Taj Mahal, visit Agra Fort, where Shah Jahan was imprisoned by his son Aurangzeb. From the tower of Musamman Burj inside the fort, Shah Jahan could see the Taj Mahal across the river. He spent the last years of his life looking at it from that window. Then walk across to Mehtab Bagh, the garden on the opposite bank of the Yamuna, for a clean rear view of the Taj without the crowds.

Local tip: The Taj Mahal entry fee does not include the main mausoleum. There is an additional Rs. 200 inner chamber fee, paid at the entrance to the mausoleum itself. Carry the exact amount in cash.

Overnight: Agra

Day 4: Agra to Jaipur via Fatehpur Sikri (240 km, approx. 4.5 hours including stop)

Fatehpur Sikri sits 35 km from Agra and is built almost entirely from red sandstone. Akbar built it as his capital in 1571 and abandoned it by 1585, most likely because of water scarcity. It has been almost perfectly preserved because it was never repurposed or rebuilt. The Buland Darwaza is 54 metres tall, the largest ceremonial gateway in India, and it was built to mark Akbar’s military victory in Gujarat. Allow 90 minutes here. Virtually every standard tour either skips it or spends 30 minutes, which is not enough time to understand what you are looking at.

Arrive in Jaipur by evening. The Albert Hall Museum in Ram Niwas Garden makes a good first stop if you arrive before 6 PM.

Local tip: Fatehpur Sikri can get crowded on weekends. If your tour falls on a Saturday, arrive as early as possible, around 7:30 to 8 AM.

Overnight: Jaipur

Day 5: Jaipur Full Day

Leave the hotel by 8 AM for Amber Fort to get the jeep rides before the heat and the tour group buses arrive. The Sheesh Mahal inside Amber Fort is a chamber lined entirely with mirror-glass tiles. When a single candle is lit inside, the light reflects across every surface. It was designed to impress visiting dignitaries and it still works.

After visiting Amber Fort, explore City Palace, which the Mewar royal family still occupies. Continue to Hawa Mahal, built with 953 windows so royal women could watch street festivals without being seen. Then visit Jantar Mantar, the UNESCO listed observatory where the central sundial, the Samrat Yantra, measures time with an accuracy of two seconds.

Afternoon: Johari Bazaar for gemstones, block-print fabric, and blue pottery. Your driver can explain which sellers are reliable and which prices are fair.

Local tip: The elephant rides at Amber Fort were suspended following animal welfare concerns. Jeep rides are the current option and they give you a better view of the fort’s outer ramparts on the way up.

Overnight: Jaipur

Day 6: Jaipur to Pushkar (145 km, approx. 2.5 hours)

Pushkar is one of only five sacred lakes in Hinduism and has 52 bathing ghats. The Brahma Temple here is one of the only temples in the world dedicated to Brahma. Non-Hindu visitors cannot enter the inner sanctum, but the exterior is worth seeing, and the ghats are fully accessible.

One practical note: at the main ghat, priests sometimes approach visitors and offer to perform a puja ceremony, then request a large donation. It is your choice whether to participate. If you prefer not to, a polite but firm no is enough.

Pushkar Bazaar is good for silver jewelry, tie-dye fabric, and camel leather goods.

Local tip: The evening aarti at Pushkar Lake is smaller and more accessible than the famous aarti at Varanasi. It starts around sunset, runs for about 20 minutes, and you can stand within a few metres of the ceremony.

Overnight: Pushkar

Day 7: Pushkar to Jodhpur (200 km, approx. 3.5 hours)

Residents of Jodhpur’s old city paint their houses indigo blue. They originally used the color to mark the homes of Brahmin families, and the tradition later spread across the neighborhood. The practical reason the paint survives is that indigo repels mosquitoes and keeps the interior walls cooler.

Mehrangarh Fort was built in 1459 by Rao Jodha and it was never successfully stormed in 560 years of recorded history. The fort sits 125 metres above the city. Walk the ramparts in the late afternoon when the old city below starts to glow. Jaswant Thada, the white marble cenotaph nearby, is worth 30 minutes and is usually quiet.

The Clock Tower area in the evening is the right place for street food. Try a makhania lassi (thick, saffron-flavoured), a mirchi bada (a chilli fritter), or pyaz kachori. Dinner on a rooftop with a view of the illuminated fort costs around Rs. 600 to 800 per person.

Overnight: Jodhpur

Day 8: Jodhpur to Udaipur (250 km, approx. 4.5 hours)

Ask your driver to take the road through Kumbhalgarh. It adds about 45 minutes but you will pass the Kumbhalgarh Fort wall, which runs for 36 km and is the second-longest continuous wall in the world after the Great Wall of China. You can stop for 30 minutes and walk a section of it.

An optional stop at Ranakpur Jain Temples is worth one hour. The main temple has 1,444 pillars and no two are carved identically. It was built in the 15th century and is still an active place of worship.

Arrive Udaipur by evening. Walk the lane along Gangaur Ghat at sunset before dinner.

Overnight: Udaipur

Day 9: Udaipur Full Day

City Palace is the largest palace complex in Rajasthan, built across 400 years by 22 successive Maharanas of Mewar. Go in the morning before tour groups fill the corridors.

Jagdish Temple, a 17th century Indo-Aryan temple, sits at the top of a long flight of steps and the stone elephant carvings at the entrance are some of the most detailed in the region. Maharana Sangram Singh built Saheliyon ki Bari, the Garden of the Maids of Honour, in the 18th century for the queen’s attendants.

Book the Lake Pichola boat ride for 5:30 PM. The ride lasts 30 minutes, costs around Rs. 400 to 500 per person, and departs from Rameshwar Ghat. At that hour the City Palace and the Jag Mandir turn the colour of old bronze.

Local tip: Fateh Sagar Lake to the north is where Udaipur locals actually go on evenings and weekends. It is a 10-minute drive and shows you a side of the city that the City Palace area does not.

Overnight: Udaipur

Day 10: Departure from Udaipur

Your driver drops you to Udaipur Airport (flights to Delhi take about 1 hour, to Mumbai about 1.5 hours) or Udaipur Railway Station for onward trains. If you have time in the morning, Shilpgram on the western edge of the city is a crafts village run by the Government of Rajasthan. It is a better place to buy Rajasthani miniature paintings, Pichwai textiles, and Mewar silverwork than the tourist shops near Lake Pichola.

If your flight gets delayed or you need local assistance after the tour ends, your driver remains available on WhatsApp to help you.
